DESCRIPTION:Join Tucson Bird Alliance’s restoration team in enhancing and maintaining habitat around the Paton Center grounds. \n\n\nPosition Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTBA’s restoration department has been hard at work acquiring new grounds and developing valuable native habitat types at the Paton Center over the past few years and we need your help to continue this work. Events will focus largely on invasive species removal and weeding but could include any of the following activities:\n\nWeeding and planting the Paton meadow to support pollinators\nTrail maintenance and building for improved visitor experience\nInvasive grass and vine pulling and management\nBrush clearing and hauling\nIrrigation system maintenance to support native plants\nPaton Center yard and grounds maintenance\nNative seed collection\n\nWe welcome you to register for these events if you are interested in any of these tasks and a TBA staff member will reach out in advance of each event to provide a more detailed plan for the day.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRequirements:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared to work in direct sun and in hot temperatures during warm months. We recommend wearing long sleeves\, long pants\, and a hat as well as sturdy close toed shoes. Please also bring a refillable water bottle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober-May: 10-12 pm\nJune-September: 9-11 am\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNumber of Openings:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are looking for 10-15 volunteers for each date. SUMMARY:Paton Center Firefly Survey with Xerces Society
DESCRIPTION:Join Saff Killingsworth from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for a presentation about southeast Arizona’s amazing fireflies. We’ll talk about firefly diversity and biology\, their threats\, and conservation efforts to protect these special creatures. We’ll also conduct a Firefly Atlas survey for the rare and imperiled Southwest springs firefly. The Firefly Atlas is a community science effort to better understand and conserve the firefly diversity of North America.

SUMMARY:Advanced Birding Series: Breeding Bird Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Trip Difficulty: Easy. Walking distance: around 1 mile. Trip Duration: 2.5 – 3 hrs. Elevation gain: none\, but with chance of slight inclines/declines. Ground condition: groomed gravel trails. Drinking water and restrooms available at park’s entrance. Benches available at periodic intervals around the Wetlands. \nBy May most of our breeding birds have arrived at Sweetwater Wetlands! Depending on the species they may be singing\, courting\, brooding\, feeding nestlings\, or already have fledglings. In this workshop we will focus on observing breeding bird behaviors\, finding and identifying juvenile birds (including challenging recently fledged\nyoung)\, practice safely viewing nests\, check nest boxes\, and learn how to enter breeding codes on eBird. Breeding birds we could see include: Gambel’s Quail\, Anna’s Hummingbird\, Common Gallinule\, Green Heron\, Red-tailed Hawk\, Great-horned Owl\, Ladder-backed Woodpecker\, Vermilion Flycatcher\, Bell’s Vireo\, Song Sparrow\, Red-\nwinged Blackbird\, and Lucy’s Warbler. The entire workshop will be conducted outside on a short walk around the birder’s paradise that is Sweetwater Wetlands. Binoculars and fields guides are available if needed\, bring a journal and pencil if you want for some field sketching! \nLimited to 12 participants. DESCRIPTION:It’s peak week at the Tubac HawkWatch! Join HWI\, the Tubac Nature Center\, and Tucson Bird Alliance for a week celebrating spring migration. This is a family-friendly event with free activities in the park to coincide with the peak flight of the Common Black Hawk migration. You can expect to hawkwatch alongside experts daily\, enjoy birding walks and lectures\, shop birdy merch and optics\, and meet live Raptor Ambassadors. \nOn Optics Days\, you can shop and try out the latest binoculars with the best optics dealers. Don’t forget to stop at HawkWatch International\, Tubac Nature Center\, and Tucson Bird Alliance for some bird merch! \nBring a chair\, hat\, sunscreen\, water\, and binoculars. \n  \nWe will be there on 3/13 and 3/14.
