SUMMARY:The Arizona Trail: An 850-mile Mountain Bike Exploration of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Along the 850-mile Arizona Trail from Utah to Mexico\, climate change is reshaping ecosystems and communities across the Southwest. In fall 2025\, Arizona Republic climate reporter and ecologist Joan Meiners spent seven weeks mountain biking the entire trail to document these changes and explore solutions with scientists\, tribes\, and local experts. Through vivid photos\, video\, and storytelling\, this presentation traces Arizona’s most urgent environmental challenges and opportunities—mile by mile—from fire-scarred forests and deepening drought to renewable energy efforts and humanitarian issues at the border. This free program is made possible by AZ Humanities and space is limited. Please note\, park admission is not included.

SUMMARY:Field Notes: Resilient Desert and Food Systems + Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Field Notes: Resilient Desert and Food Systems brings together a mix of 2026 panel proposals and festival-curated adaptations\, all centered on agave as a practical tool for regenerative agriculture in arid and semi-arid landscapes. Across the session\, we look at how agave can support soil restoration\, water-smart farming\, and long-term resilience\, grounded in ecological knowledge and place-based agricultural practice. \nJoin us for a chiltepín plant sale hosted by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and a heritage foods food truck invite for lunch! \n10:00 AM to 11:00 AM | Resilient Desert Food Systems\nModerated by Dr. Jonathan Mabry (Tucson City of Gastronomy)\nCesar Lopez (Santa Cruz Farm)\nDr. Laurel Bellante (Center for Regional Food Studies\, University of Arizona)\nAyman Mostafa (Maricopa County Extension\, University of Arizona)\nWhat does a desert food system look like when it is built for heat\, drought\, and the long run? This conversation looks at agave through a food systems lens\, connecting its deep roots in desert food traditions with emerging approaches to climate-adapted agriculture and the role agave can play in shaping resilient food economies across the Sonoran Desert. \n11:00 AM to 12:00 PM | Agave Traditions and Practices in Living Landscapes\nCommunity-led session\nModerated by Dr. César Iván Ojeda Linares (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)\nManuel Chacon (Mazot)\nNoah Schlager (Collaboratory for Indigenous Data Governance\, University of Arizona)\nRafael Encinas Molina (Batuq)\nRandy Young (La Tierra del Jaguar)\nThis panel brings together producers\, conservationists\, and researchers working with agave to share how traditions take shape on the land. Rooted in local and traditional knowledge\, the conversation moves from soil to harvest\, where cultivation\, care\, and use are tied to surrounding plants\, soils\, and species\, including pollinators like bats. It reflects practices that sustain agave alongside habitat\, biodiversity\, and working lands\, alongside ways of knowing shaped through ethnobotany and the responsibility of how knowledge is held and carried over time. \nEVENT SPONSORS \nUA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences | UA W.A. SUMMARY:The Geometry of Birding
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Peg Abbott\, owner and founder of Naturalist Journeys.  If birding is your lifelong passion\, or even just an enjoyable hobby\, you know that it grows with a stairstep progression of acquired skills. Sometimes you level out in ability and get frustrated. Peg Abbott of Naturalist Journeys presents a skill session aimed to help you with a new perspective. Within each bird there is a ruler or other tools related to shape that can help you unlock its ID. Learn how the basics of geometry – points\, lines\, angles\, and planes – come together to create shapes. And how comparing the relative proportions of these shapes within a single bird\, or between birds in a group or flock\, can help you gain that next level to empower your birding skills and passion to grow.

SUMMARY:Tumamoc Talks: Desert Purple Martins – Star Birds of the Arizona Monsoon
DESCRIPTION:Desert Purple Martins – Star Birds of the Arizona Monsoon with Jennie MacFarland \nThe Desert Purple Martin (Progne subis hesperia) is a distinct subspecies that times its nesting to monsoon abundance and nests almost exclusively in saguaros or other large columnar cacti. Desert Purple Martins are extremely understudied with large gaps in knowledge about their nesting\, migration\, and wintering grounds. Very recent discoveries and data results will be shared along with lots of video and audio that showcases the charming and fascinating Desert Purple Martin. Jennie MacFarland is the Director of Bird Conservation at Tucson Bird Alliance. She co-coordinates the Arizona Bird Areas Program with Tice Supplee and also coordinates the Tucson Bird Count\, a city-wide\, urban spring bird count.
