DESCRIPTION:“Cathay Williams: A Female Buffalo Soldier” in-person presentation by Floyd Gray in the Territorial Patio at Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum\, 196 N Court Ave\, Tucson* \n\n        7:30-9 pm. $13 with preregistration\, $15 at the door\, Presidio Museum members $10. \nCathay Williams\, an African American woman\, successfully posed as a man and served in the US Army in the 1860s. Floyd Gray will discuss her experiences as a Buffalo Soldier\, serving in the 38th Infantry (one of six segregated\, all-black regiments) during the Civil War. Floyd Gray\, an Adjunct Researcher in the University of Arizona Department of Geosciences\, on the boards of Friends of Tucson’s Birthplace and the Greater Southern Arizona Area Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers 9th and 10th Horse Cavalry Association.

DESCRIPTION:“Tour of Barrio Viejo” with Mely Bohlman and Franklin Lane sponsored by Pima County Parks & Recreation\, starting at Bar Crisol\, 196 W. Simpson St.\, Tucson* \n\nDiscover the history\, architecture\, and art of one of Tucson’s oldest neighborhoods. Barrio Viejo is home to one of  the largest 19th century adobe communities in the Southwest. This is 0.9-mile walking tour that goes to El Tiradito shrine and eventually to Lee Ho’s former grocery store highlights the transition of the Barrio from Territorial status to the arrival of the railroad\, urban renewal\, and now gentrification. Mely Bohlman is an Environmental Education Program Specialist for Pima County Conservation Lands and Resources. Franklin Lane is a former high school teacher and hiking guide\, member of the Pima County Master Naturalists\, and a passionate amateur historian of the Southwest.

DESCRIPTION:At our monthly (fourth Saturday) Archaeology Day\, representatives of Tucson’s archaeology community come to Mission Garden to teach practical hands-on skills. Archaeology Southwest will be doing their Hands-on Archaeology program. It allows kids of all ages to try out fascinating ancient technologies. Old Pueblo Archaeology Center is represented at these events\, also presenting interactive programs about things like pinch pots\, pendants\, and cordage. John Palacio speaks about and demonstrates making replicas of petroglyphs. Come join in any time between 8am and 11am.
