Heritage Experiences
The Santa Cruz Valley takes its name from the Santa Cruz River, which rises in the grasslands of Arizona’s San Rafael Valley, flows into northern Mexico, and then loops back into Arizona and eventually sinks into the desert north of Tucson.
The varied landscape within the river’s middle and upper watershed has many life zones that host a diversity of plant and animal life, including tropical species, unique desert species, and mountaintop survivors from the last Ice Age. The valley is known for its variety of birds, butterflies, lizards, and other wildlife, and contains many popular bird-watching spots.
This is one of America’s longest-inhabited regions, with traces of human occupation extending back more than 12,000 years. The people who live here today represent several cultures, both native and immigrant, that maintain their own distinct identities but also influence each other. The Santa Cruz Valley is the homeland of the Tohono O’odham (the Desert People), a Native American tribe that has lived here since very ancient times, and the Yaqui (Yoeme) Indians.
Saguaros are the largest cactus in the U.S. and are found exclusively in the Sonoran Desert. They can live to be 150-200 years old. Photo courtesy Pete Gregoire.
Historic Spanish missions, presidio fortresses, and ranches are found throughout the valley. Residents of the Santa Cruz Valley are preserving and restoring their architectural heritage. They celebrate the cultural traditions of the region at many museums, parks, and annual festivals. A number of rural communities still contain thriving cattle ranches, farms, orchards, vineyards, and copper mines.
Residents and visitors enjoy exploring many parks, public lands, trails, museums, and cultural festivals in the Santa Cruz Valley.
The maps and tours featured below are a sampling of the numerous heritage experiences to be found in the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area and will be updated regularly.
